Connect Acxite to HMRC
Streamline your tax filing by connecting your Acxite account directly to HMRC. This secure connection allows you to submit Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT and Income Tax Self-Assessment returns in just a few clicks, saving you time and reducing manual errors.
Pre-requisites
To ensure a smooth connection process, please have the following available:
- Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): 2FA must be enabled on your Acxite account for security. If you haven’t done this yet, please follow our guide: Set up Two-Factor Authentication.
- HMRC Government Gateway Credentials: You will need your User ID and Password for your HMRC account.
- Your Tax Numbers:
- For VAT: Your 9-digit VAT Registration Number (VRN).
- For Income Tax: Your National Insurance (NI) number.
Steps to Connect Acxite to HMRC for Income Tax or VAT Filing
You can follow these steps to connect your Acxite business with HMRC.
Step 1 – Navigate to the VAT Summary or Income Tax Summary page.
Step 2 – Click the ‘Connect to HMRC’ button on the top right.
Step 3 – In case of VAT summary, please enter your VAT registration number, and in case of the Tax Summary page, please enter your National Insurance number.
Step 4 – Click the Continue button to navigate to the HMRC portal.
Step 5 – Click the Continue button again to let Acxite view your information on the HMRC Portal.
Step 6 – Click the “Sign in to Government Gateway” button.
Step 7 – Enter your HMRC account credentials in the login portal and click the Sign in button.
Step 8 – Click the “Give Permissions” button.
You will be automatically redirected back to Acxite. You will see a confirmation message that the connection was successful.
Acxite will now begin to import your current tax obligations (like open VAT periods) and past filing information from HMRC. This may take a few moments. Once complete, you are ready to prepare and submit your tax returns directly from Acxite.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is it safe to connect my HMRC account to Acxite?
Yes. The connection is highly secure and uses an official HMRC process called OAuth 2.0. Acxite never sees or stores your Government Gateway password. We are granted limited, specific permissions to view your tax obligations and submit returns you have prepared and approved.
Q: Do I have to reconnect every time I file a return?
No. This is a one-time setup. However, for security, HMRC requires that you re-authorise the connection every 18 months. Acxite will notify you when it’s time to do so, and you can simply follow the same steps to renew the connection.
Q: What should I do if the connection fails or I get an error?
First, double-check that you are using the correct Government Gateway User ID and Password. If you are certain the credentials are correct, wait a few minutes and try again, as HMRC’s service may be temporarily unavailable. If the problem persists, please contact our support team for assistance.
Q: I connected the wrong HMRC account or entered the wrong VAT/NI number. How can I fix this?
You will need to disconnect the current integration and start again. You can disconnect from within your Acxite Settings > Integrations page, or directly from your HMRC Government Gateway account under “Manage account permissions”. Once disconnected, you can follow this guide again with the correct details.
